How to switch from S mode in Windows 10 to fully functional version of Windows

If you are reading this article, then you might have very well purchased a Windows laptop recently and have noticed that you can’t install certain applications. If that is your case, then you have nothing at all to worry about as you are only a few minutes or even seconds away from correcting that. Should I have used the term ‘correcting’ though ? Probably not.

What is Windows S mode though ?

Windows 10 in S mode is is basically a feature that bars user from installing applications that weren’t downloaded from the official Microsoft Store. Microsoft calls it a security feature that is put in place to prevent one from installing potentially unsafe apps , but of course, many of the basic applications the average user uses , as simple as your Chrome or Firefox web browsers are not available on Microsoft Store . This means that like you , just about every user will eventually see the need to switch S mode.

Things to note before switching from S mode

There are a few things that one might want to know about switching from Windows 10 S mode to a fully functional version of Windows:

  • It is completely free to switch from Windows 10 S mode
  • Switching from Windows S mode will not negatively affect your computer’s performance.
  • Once you switch from Windows S mode, you can’t go back.

Steps in switching from S mode in Windows 10.

Step 1.

Confirm that your laptop is in Windows 10 S mode by:

Clicking the windows icon at the bottom left hand corner of your screen. Or simply press the windows key on your keyboard.
Click on the gear icon which represents ‘settings‘ as seen in the photo above.
Select System (Display, sound, notifications, power)

Step 2: Changing from S mode.

Repeat first two steps above to get you to this screen again.

This time, select ‘Update& Security‘.
In the left sidebar, select ‘Activation‘.
Click on ‘Go to the Store‘ .
Click ‘Get‘ . Here you might be asked to sign in using your Microsoft email or phone number. You can create an email if you don’t already have one.
After entering your email address etc. and clicking next. You will be shown the progress of switching.

Your system at this point should be showing Windows 10 Home, or Pro without an S.

You should now be able to download and install all applications you want to. Remember though to always exercise caution with all unknown applications. Installing an antivirus protection is always a good move.
